Very well trained soldiers
Puerto Ayora is located on Academy Bay, the anchoring place for medium and small sized boats that reach this port located on Santa Cruz Island, part of the Galapagos National Park.
My husband and I had decided that we didn’t want to risk our children getting sea-sick, so we rented a villa and spent our vacation on a land based tour.
After an early morning visit to the Charles Darwin Station we were walking through the main street which faces the bay and were all delighted by a really funny scene, the interaction of fishermen who were cleaning their day’s catch and the brown pelicans, who behaved just like little soldiers, very attentive to the fishermen’s every move, if he moved his hand to the left they moved their head to the left, if he raised his hand they all looked up at the same time, and so on.
After a few minutes my little children were also synchronized with the pelican’s movements, look up, look to the left, look to the right… it was one of the best experiences of the day… they actually got to play with pelicans… and they are big!! Some time has passed bye and from time to time they still play the “pelican soldiers”.
