Floreana Lava Lodge wins TripAdvisor “Certificate of Excellence” Award, Showcased in USA Documentary

floreana lava lodge, galapagos

Too often there are trends in society that serve little or shallow purposes. However, in the world of travel, the ecotourism trend is beneficial on all ends. On the one hand, properly managed and maintained ecotourism efforts support the birth and growth of businesses and economies. On the other side of the same hand, it creates synergy of the business with local communities and people, taking into account the delicate nature of existing customs and age-old practices. No wonder Floreana Lava Lodge is so excited for having been given a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor, not least for being the first community-based tourism initiative in the Galapagos Islands.

Found on the small but impressive Floreana Island in the southern part of the wildlife haven archipelago, the lodge has been making travelers happy for many years. However, the owners soon decided that it was only fair that the island’s 125 or so permanent residents start reaping some of the benefits of tourism to their home, rather than just looking in from the outside.

Today, Floreana Lava Lodge works hard to develop programs and initiatives and provide technical and financial support that will lead to better operational and organizational capacities in the local people. For example, in early 2015 the people will be able to offer 2 to 3-hour organized hikes to the famous tourist destination Post Office Bay and to present kayak and snorkeling equipment rentals in the same area. In turn, it is hoped that tourism on Floreana Island will grow in an organic and sustainable way.

An even more important reason to develop Floreana with the future in mind is because its history is at stake. Ever since the 18th and 19th centuries, pirates have been visiting this long-lost piece of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Since then, a small community has grown. But if tourism grows carelessly, the people and their past will soon be forgotten.

To learn more about the unique history of Floreana Island, make way to your local theater and catch a showing of “The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden” by Geller/Goldfine Productions, a documentary about Floreana’s earliest residents. Using meticulously gathered research, documents, and unearthed information, the team was able to present a rare and valuable story.

If you aren’t able to see the film on the big screen, then try visiting Floreana Island itself on your next Galapagos cruise! Copies of the film will soon be made available at Floreana Lava Lodge.
