Guides in the Galapagos Islands

“The guide made the trip” is an oft-heard phrase heard from travelers returning from a successful Galapagos tour. And it’s true – for a naturalist destination like the Galapagos Islands, where in-depth knowledge of the unique flora, fauna, geology and history that makes this archipelago so fascinating, is a necessary tour component. But more than just straight science, we’ve found it’s imperative that Galapagos guides are also able to relate to guests on a personal level, and make information about blue-footed boobies or lava flows exciting and interesting for travelers of all ages. A top guide has trained eyes that can spot a manta ray from the dinghy, or a pod of dolphins. A top guide can tailor his or her presentation style to match with guest personalities and ensure they have the best possible experience in the Galapagos.

There is a rough system in the Galapagos for ranking  guides as level I, II or III, where I is a licensed guide with limited knowledge and III is the most knowledgeable (often with a biology-related university degree). However, this system has become outdated. With our Galapagos expertise we’ve come to recognize that a guide is so much more than just straight knowledge, and that level I guides can be fantastic fits for some families, while perhaps a level III guide would not be. We have the local expertise to match the appropriate boat experience and guiding style for each traveler. This is why it’s important to use a Galapagos planning expert – our consultants know the Galapagos and know the guides, ensuring your trip is extraordinary!
