Fundación Scalecia Galapagos

Think Globally, Educate Locally.

The children of the world are the hope for its future. We believe in education as one of the principal tools to ensure sustainability in the long term. The Scalesia Foundation is the only non-governmental institution that is investing 100% of its efforts in EDUCATION on the Islands.

Latin Excursions is an important contributor of Fundación Scalecia please visit our foundation's friends page

Mimosa Villa 3 & 4 Nights

Latin Excursions believes the most ideal way to visit the Galapagos is to do a portion of the itinerary based on land. Whether doing most of your visit on a boat or on land , we offer time tested options of which one is using the Mimosa villa which will come with your own private guide and private tours. Built in 2005, , Mimosa is a superbly villa located in the exclusive Punta Estrada neighborhood of Puerto Ayora in the main island of Santa Cruz in the Galapagos With a capacity of up to 10 guests, this house is snugly positioned two minutes’ walk away from the port of Puerto Ayora, the beach and two of the best restaurants in town. Walking is the only way in the vicinity as there are no roads and hence, no traffic. The pedestrian-only access, the paths and the beautiful mangroves of the surroundings remind locals and visitors of what the town looked like a few decades ago. The only way to reach this neighborhood is to take a 5-minute water taxi ride from the busier Puerto Ayora.

The house is aimed to give maximum comfort to our guests so they can relax and enjoy an Idyllic, self-catering vacation without the hassles of house maintenance .

With its four huge, comfortable en-suite rooms and pleasant sea-breeze and views over the ocean from the terrace, Mimosa is ideal for one or two families looking to wind down after a boat excursion or those wanting to see a better perspective of the islands than from boat.

An ideal combination is the six day western islands itinerary on board the M/V Santa Cruz – see details here.

We have a 3 and 4 night package which can be extended to a week with following sample tours:

1) The Charles Darwin Research Station
2) Tortuga Bay
3) Highlands: Giant Tortoises & Los Gemelos

The tours are aimed for English-speaking tourists who would like to know more about the places in question and receive good-quality guiding and knowledge. Attempts to be flexible with timings are also considered!

Paul McFarling

Born and brought up in London, UK, Paul came to work as a naturalist in Galapagos after obtaining a high class honors degree in Biology at Swansea University, UK. His knowledge and guiding expertise, gained since arriving in 1992, will impart information about the wildlife itself but incorporate this into the fundamental reasons that Galapagos is on the map today!

Charles Darwin Research Station Tour

Your guide will explain the various conservation projects, missions and history of both the Galapagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station. You will learn about the fundamentals and details of evolution with the famous iconic examples we’ll see along the way such as the giant tortoises and Darwin Finches and less famous examples like lava lizards and cacti!
The CDRS area has the richest diversity of coastal and arid flora of the whole archipelago which reflects the local finch diversity! Understand the biological terms endemism, native and introduced and their implications in Galapagos. Discuss the effects of anthropomorphism. Above all, have a jolly old time with Lonesome George!

Tortuga Bay Tour

The walk surpasses many of the visitor sites on a typical cruise with its beauty, uniqueness and wildlife. See some of the best stands of giant Opuntia cacti in un-spoilt arid vegetation. Learn about the abundant marine iguana population inhabiting the lava outcrop, the turtles feeding in the waves nearby and a good chance of sharks and rays inhabiting the waters nearby. There are also a huge number of shore and land birds along the beach. Snorkeling is optional depending on conditions so please enquire about snorkel equipment beforehand!

Highlands Tour

During the ride into the highlands in our private vehicle, you’ll hear about the change in vegetation zones and observe how the arid flora transitions into the humid, cloud forest. An understanding of the climate and currents will explain this phenomenon!
Lava-tubes, sink holes and parasitic cones will provide the props for a class on the local geology and volcanoes of the archipelago.
Santa Cruz is home to some three thousand giant tortoises, the biggest in the islands and we will get close looks at them, often in abundance. We’ll learn about their physiology, migration patterns and status.
While walking through one of the best surviving stands of Scalesia forest, an endemic, evolving ecosystem, you’ll understand the vulnerability and future of such a sensitive ecosystem as well as appreciate the various, less frequented Darwin finches including the elusive woodpecker finch.
