Haciendas

 Northern Andes, Otavalo

 Zuleta

Dating from the late XVI century, the farm lies in the spectacular Andean mountain range of Ecuador at 9,600 feet (2,800 meters) above  sea level, and only two hours north of Quito, the capital of Ecuador.

Zuleta is a colonial working farm of 4,000 acres (2,000 hectares) that has belonged to the Plaza Lasso family for more than 100 years.  A few years ago the family descendants decided to open this property to high end guests,  who will appreciate the uniqueness of this property.  According to  their traditions the house is maintained as a family retreat,  workers are members of the local indigenous community, and guests are welcomed to a family home, not to a hotel.

Zuleta was chosen as one of the world’s “Top Ten Finds” by Outside magazine and named as one of the best Ecuador hotels  by National Geographic Traveler.

The hacienda has 15 beautifully decorated bedrooms, all with their own fire place; ancient gardens along with cosy living and reading rooms offer a peaceful atmosphere. Delicious  Ecuadorian cuisine among other types of gastronomic adventures are offered daily, prepared with organic vegetables, trout and dairy products produced on the Hacienda.

Hacienda Zuleta offers a great variety of activities and places to visit to its guests. Horse riding, mountain bike excursions,  a horse drawn carriage for trips on hacienda grounds,  milking, the cheese factory, a condor recuperation center,  pre-inca pyramids, the organic garden, an embroidery shop.  If you happen to be at the house on June 23, you will participate in an ancient festival that brings the entire indigenous community to the main plaza of the hacienda.

Cusin

Cusin´s original house was built in 1602 at an altitude of 8,500 ft / 2,600 m, on the slopes of Imbabura volcano, and at walking distance from San Pablo lake,   it consists of 13 rooms, most of them with chimney, decorated with Ecuadorian  handcrafts and paintings.  The living room and dinning room recreate an old English country home, they hold a beautiful collection of European tapestries and Ecuadorian colonial religious artifacts.   The restoration of the colonial house was done respecting as much as possible the original decoration and in many cases even reproducing them.

The adjoining Monasterio de Cusin has 12 rooms, all with a chimney, a conference room, sitting rooms bar and a library, its general ambiance is that of a monastery or cloister, with a large central patio and small patios with fountains in the bedrooms areas.

The  gardeners took advantage of a predictable equatorial sun and  have created several acres of year-round flowering gardens  including cobblestone lanes, fountain patios, belladonna, bougainvillea, agapantha, foxgloves, orchids, palms, which attract over 50 species of birds.
