Making a Difference in Galapagos with The Scalesia Foundation

Published by Jorge under Galapagos

Since our very beginnings at Galapagos Excursions we have been supporting different causes to ensure the preservation of the Islands and its inhabitants.

As part of our efforts this time we want to get our visitors involved in another great cause that is constantly working on making a difference on the education of the children of Galapagos Islands.

The Scalesia Foundation has been working for more than decade on changing the educational system on the Islands. At the moment the schools are failing on turning the students into future citizens and leaders that can that can ensure long term and sustainable developments for the islands.

In 1994 the foundation started and educational pilot on the Tomas de Berlanga School and after 13 years the school has proudly graduated its first class and currently have more than 100 students between elementary and secondary school.

But the population in Galapagos has experienced a huge growth in past 25 years and this has created a big burden on and educational system, on top of that the actual curriculum of many of the schools does not match the needs of the social and environmental reality of the natives of the Islands.

As you can see there’s a ton of work to be done to fix the current situation and the main goal of Scalesia Foundation is to educate the children and help them to become the best they can possibly be because they are the future of the world.

If you’re interested on being part of this amazing cause please contact us and we’ll fill you with all the details on how can you get involved.

Combine Modes and Activities When Visiting the Galapagos

Published by Jorge under Trip Tips

Our founding company Latin Excursions and this sister company Galapagos Excursions, are  award winning Travel companies, specialized in high quality travel experiences in Latin America. We have been sending discerning clients to the Galapagos over the last decade. Our most satisfying tour arrangements are the specialized tours we create for groups and families.

We consider the most ideal way to visit the Galapagos is combining both a boat based expedition with a land based one. For some clients, this might mean ending the boat expediton at a hotel or for larger groups we suggest chartering a boat combined with a villa stay on the islands. We have created numerous exclusive products offering this combination and highly suggest it for families and small groups of up to 14 people.  This exclusive way of visiting allows families  and tour groups to explore the islands in a private yacht followed by a stay at the islands finest villa where one can choose to relax or continue with other activities based from the villa such as snorkeling, diving, visiting a local school we support or simply relaxing after an intense boat itinerary.

Santa Cruz Island

Our expedition continues in the enchanted islands – today we visited Santa Cruz in the central part of the archipelago.

Shortly after our disembarkation from the MV Endeavour, at Puerto Ayora, the main town of the island, our guests had some free time to spend in town. Later in the morning we took buses to explore the highlands; our destination was Cerro Mesa, a beautiful reserve where one can find a lot of endemic vegetation and some little ponds of fresh water, full of life. Two giant tortoises endemic to the area were found here. Some of us visited a pit crater and then went mountain biking. At the end of our morning’s visits we all gathered at a local restaurant for lunch; after doing so many activities we had some time to relax in the restaurant’s swimming pool.

On our way back to Puerto Ayora, we stopped first to see a giant lava tunnel and afterwards continued to the Charles Darwin Research Station. At the Darwin Station we saw the breeding program of giant tortoises step-by-step, from the little babies to the ones that were almost ready to be repatriated to their islands of origin.

It was a great day with a lot of new things that enriched our experience in the Galápagos; finally we finished our day with the performance of a local band of musicians from town.
